She is Shannie Cajoles-Gitgitin or known as Jeck2 to many or Shannie. A happy Nanay of two.
Shannie got married early. It was a happy marriage despite of the challenges. Both husband and wife made things lighter and happier.
But it started to become hard after her husband died. She has to work more than double. At that time for a young solo parent is so challenging. Well, it's not easy all the time specially when economically challenged.
Thanks to her relatives on both sides that have helped in many ways.
Shannie has to explore work in the metropolis to provide for her kids. It's not an easy money-picking life of course for a lady from the province. But she has to do it. Thanks to the neighbors and friends that were able to facilitate the basics for a newbie in the city. She may be seen smiling but it is to inspire herself and all of those of the same experience.
Right now Shannie is back in town. Started a small livelihood (buy and sell). To have atleast a buffer for daily consumptions, she started a naturally grown vegetable garden.
Raised in a farmer family she's used to the difficulties of life. During her elementary and high school days, it was their system to spend the weekend in their farm and bring back to the Poblacion a week-long agriculture supply for the siblings' consumption. At that time to and from Brgy Villangit is so difficult.
She's selling now some produced of their farm in Villangit and her small garden in Purok 13, Poblacion.
"Way surenderay" she said when asked of how does she keep on going. "For the children and our future" she added. This what makes her survived and to survive in life.
Bagat Notes is inspired by Shannie's inspiration and determination. We know that there are many Shannie out there, inspired and determined to pursue their dreams and the dreams of their children. Programs and services must be made available for them and the society must be in solidarity in the struggles of many solo parents beyond cash incentives and ayuda systems.
Empowerment for the Solo parents must go beyond household chores. We have many successful solo parents in their respective fields but of course each is not of the same boat and ocean.
Surviving the taste of beer and gin. Like Shannie, the experiences honed us and taught us to stand despite all of tough odds.
