Communities taking on

Coined as paLASANG 2.0, the convenors in partnership with Keoya Elementary School (KES) administration, KES Parents and Teachers Association and the Kioya Barangay Local Government Unit successfully planted 40 endemic and fruit trees at the KES campus hillside and ground on July 23, 2023.
Prior to the planting of the trees, a discussion on climate and environment situations was led by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office.

Miss Eushie Infiesto-Montiman, the Sibagat MENRO-designate and Solid Waste Management Officer shared the sad situation of the environment and the whole biodiversity and its impact to the lives on Earth. She also laid down the challenge that the human population has the responsibility to protect, promote, preserve, nurture and restore the fast-depleting environment. She emphasized practical efforts at home or at the personal level can be a big contribution much more with the collective efforts.

Commitments

Several personalities and influencers have also graced the paLASANG 2.0 and have expressed messages of inspiration and commitment to the campaign.

Representing the Bae Tu Bagat 2023 title holders, Miss Alyza Bañez Bebis expressed her thoughts, wishes and thanks on her participation in the paLASANG 2.0.

"It was truly an honor to be a part of the PALASANG initiative. I strongly believe that it is our duty to protect our home and create a greener future for the next generation to come. This was an empowering experience for me and I thank everyone who has made this activity possible. I am looking forward to doing this again and I hope that our community will grow as we continue to take these little steps towards change," she said. She's joined by Bae Turismo 2023 Julia Lirah Labor Jamero.

Sangguniang Bayan Member and Committee on Agriculture Chair Francisco Garlit also manifested his commitment and support to initiatives nurturing the environment and organic way of farming.

The volunteers and the community residents thru the PTA officers and the BLGU have agreed to closely monitor the seedlings to ensure the survival and growth of the planted trees.

In his message Kioya Brgy Captain Arnold Pilapil expressed his gratitude to the initiative and committed along with the Keoya Elementary School Kinder teacher representing the school's PTA Giselle Madrid Hagonoy to monitor and take good care of the 40 planted endemic and fruit trees around KES campus. "Amo kining amumahon ug paga-ampingan," said by the School Principal Junel Gozo in an online exchange with Bagat Notes.

Sibagat MENRO and Nagkahiusang Mag-uumang Organiko (NAMAO) provided the seedlings.
Chill with a Cause

Night before the paLASANG, volunteers had an overnight chill and nature experience at FLORA Tilapia Hatchery . The final details of the paLASANG were discussed and tasks were delegated accordingly. "It was a chill with a cause experience," according to an invited volunteer from the Brgy Poblacion as they enjoy the sunset, nature's music, farm life and the sunrise at the farm.

Volunteerism: Intergeneration, multi-stakeholders

During the tree planting proper conveners noticed that the participating groups and individuals is composed of different generations, from pupils of the school to younger generation and the parents including the civic and government agencies. There's a notable presence of children and youth. Indeed, hope remains alive.

"We are more than happy that independent initiatives like paLASANG are welcomed by the stakeholders of Keoya Elementary School, of the Barangay Kioya and of Sibagat as a whole. It is important to note that our collective effort is very much needed at the community level even at the households. In a way we are able to contribute in responding to the climate and ecological crisis in our midst. We are thankful for the commitments and partnerships. On behalf of the convening groups and individuals, we would liike to give credit to individuals and organizations that have supported paLASANG 2.0 and the previous one financially, logistically and morally and to all of the volunteers who believed and joined. Lasangon nato ang Kalibutan," Paul Fenis one of the paLASANG convener said in an online interview.

Changes beyond the tree

Bagat Notes believes in the power of peoples movement. And it is very crucial in defining what priority programs for development the local and national governments should focus on. And beyond planting trees is the battle to change the dominant culture and mindset in looking at nature or environmental resources. Let us stop the concept and culture of commodifying nature. At the structural level, policies and practices that are destructive to humans and the biodiversity should be abolished and intensify the promotion of the sustainable and ecological ones. Instead of profit and commercial frame on natural resource management and exploitation, it must be looked at as a source of life for today and the coming ones.

After the tree planting, volunteers went to the Flora Tilapia Hatchery and enjoyed the scenic view, the farm and experienced the food prepared. While in brief and informal sharing conveners had an assessment.

Notable after the two activities, commitments and partnerships to the cause at the community level is very important in nurturing and restoring nature.

paLASANG, a community-led BALIK-GUBAT drive was launched last April 22, 2023 (Earth Day) in contribution to the global efforts to cool down the Earth and the fight against the intensifying impact of the climate crisis. The launching was hosted by the Flora Tilapia Hatchery.

Balik-Gubat aims to bring to the senses of the humans how important forests are; to bring the people to the community and meet fellow travelers and contribute in the efforts to restore Nature; to have immersion programs on the daily lives of the people and.communities producing healthy foods; spread awareness and invite commitment to the environmental advocacy;; and help develop the bond and network of volunteers for the environment among gender, ethnic and religious affiliations, professions and social status.

Three months after the launching, paLASANG is here again partnering the Keoya Elementary School.
On the 23rd of July, a tree-growing activity will be held at the KES grounds with a little ceremonial covenant discussions with the Parents and Teachers Association and the community. After which, a follow through activity at the Flora Tilapia Hatchery will be organized.

The day before (22nd), there are volunteers that may camp-in advance at the Flora Tilapia Hatchery grounds overnight and do some Bayanihan work, Catch and Buy fish, have exchanges on various reflective concerns, etc.

There will be no registration fee and each volunteer must ensure his/her/their fare, food, water and other necessities. You must bring your own tent or hammock if you want to join the camping.
