Sibagat Youths take on the challenge

Of different affiliations, persuasions, background and social status young people in Sibagat join the call for paLASANG project - a Balik-Gubat drive launched last April 22, 2023 in time of the Earth Day 2023 observance.

The Launch

FLORA Tilapia Hatchery , Kalye Trese Youth , Bagat Youth Alliance and Bagat Notes through an online exchange convened the call and invited folks, friends and fellow travellers for environmental advocacy.

Voluntary

There was no high expectation on the turn-out since the call was just out a few days before that date. To have the most 20 persons to respond is already a positive indicator. And it's a success! More than 20 individuals on voluntary basis responded to the call.

Interconnected

Flora Tilapia Hatchery opened its space to be the launching site and offered fruit-tree seedlings to be planted. The place is also strategic for the paLASANG launching since water is vital in fisheries and growing trees is vital for abundant water supply at the same time to help improve the biodiversity in the area. Strategic also because paLASANG brings young people nearer to nature and learn and appreciate while having fun and explore. In the long run, the place would be reforested, it will produce naturally grown harvests (agri-aqua), will develop local income for the community and protect the water. This is indeed the concrete picture of 'Water is Life.

Fun Learning

The youth leaders experienced the Skylab ride that has become more enjoyable as the road elevation goes high. Feeding and fishing in the FTH Fish Terraces was also a hands-on learning for the leaders.

Bagat Youth Alliance introduced the global call on the sustainable development which environment is integral and even at the core.

Reynand Flora shared his real-life experience and transformation as a worker in the urban city affected by the health and economic crises together during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Young personnel of the municipal agriculture office on their personal capacities shared also the importance of agroecology as a framework in development. Organic Agriculture farming as known publicly is the strategic development paradigm of Sibagat local government unit.

Youth leaders also exchanged perspectives related to the environment, agriculture and the intense climate crisis.

Solidarity

It is also necessary for the consumers to understand the lives and struggles of the food producers. paLASANG somehow is an additional platform to value food growers and show gratefulness to them. As consumers we always demand quality food harvests but did we demand quality service for the producers? Mr Flora shared this whole dynamics of production and diversification including the farm's plans and the support received.

paLASANG?

paLASANG is an advocacy that invites young people and humans of all ages not just to grow a tree but deeply understand the mutual and symbiotic relation of humans and nature. paLASANG is a humble contribution of the Sibagat individuals on voluntary basis to stand against the impact of the climate crisis together and combat concretely, proactively. paLASANG aims further to invite all ages to be consistent and environmentally aware and make it a culture to treat nature as source of life, living and future not a source of income and dominance

Gratitude

It is our utmost salute to the commitment shown and expressed by the folks that have supported the paLASANG project. Let us hear your stories, experiences and hopes. Let us keep on!

What's next?

As to what's next? It is then up in your or our hands.

A deeper reflection report will be posted

Salamat sa volunteers nga nagluto, nananom, nangaon, nagdonate... Padayon!
