STATEMENT for INDEPENDENCE DAY 2023

As we commemorate the 125th Independence Day of the Philippines, it is critical to reflect on the challenges faced by women in our nation. Women continue to confront oppressions rooted in patriarchy, colonial mentality, and traditional beliefs that hinder their progress and well-being as individuals. We must dismantle these barriers and work towards creating a society that is liberating for women and other oppressed gender and ensures the full realization of women's rights as human rights.

That Patriarchy and Capitalism, as it deeply ingrained in our society’s power dynamics in the economic, political, and socio-cultural systems oppressive to women and to our environment.

Patriarchy remains a widespread mentality and practices in the Philippine cultures. It perpetuates harmful stereotypes such as power play in gender roles leading to incestuous and non-consensual sexual acts between couple, restricts opportunities, and undermining the value of women in the reproductive and productive spheres of society. Addressing patriarchy requires structural change with comprehensive and collective efforts to dismantle oppressive norms and promote gender equality and inclusive policies and practices that empower less “masculine” men and women in all spheres of life.

The lingering effects of colonial mentality continue to influence the perception of women in our society. It is essential to challenge the standards of beauty, success, and behavior that have been imposed on Filipino women at home, in the community, in the media and market venues. We must promote gender relationships and appreciation that respect and recognize our diverse identities and embrace our uniqueness as human beings, as people with unique cultural heritage, nurturing an environment that values and respects the contributions of all women, regardless of their background.

Gender-based violence remains a pressing concern, affecting women from all walks of life. We must confront this issue head-on by advocating for comprehensive laws, enforcing strict penalties for perpetrators, and providing safe spaces and support networks for (victims and) survivors. Education and awareness programs are essential to foster a culture of respect, consent, and gender equality.

Reproductive health remains a critical issue that disproportionately affects women in the Philippines. Women's right to access comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including family planning services, education, and safe abortion, should be guaranteed, and protected. By prioritizing reproductive health, we can empower women to make informed choices about their bodies, ensure their well-being, and contribute to their overall socio-economic empowerment of peoples.

To achieve true independence, women must be free from all forms of violence and oppression. Women have always played a vital role in shaping the course of our history, from the revolutionary heroes to the modern-day activists. It is essential to recognize and amplify women's voices and experiences, enabling them to actively participate in decision-making processes across all sectors. By abolishing oppressive laws, structural violence, patriarchal relationships and by promoting gender equality in leadership positions, implementing gender-responsive policies, and providing equitable opportunities, we can harness the full potential of women in nation-building.

Furthermore, we recognize the struggle for gender identity rights. It is crucial to create an inclusive society that respects and upholds the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals, allowing them to live authentically without fear of discrimination or violence.

On this Independence Day, let us commit ourselves to the pursuit of gender equality, the eradication of patriarchal relations and the liberation of all women against all forms of oppression under commercialist capitalist domination. By challenging oppressive mindsets, empowering women through self-organization and actions. By ensuring that women contributions in the home, in the community’s affair and in society as a whole are well-recognized and valued. We can forge a society that truly embodies the principles of freedom, justice and equality for all!
