The Bombing incident during the Holy Mass celebration of the First Sunday of Advent of the Catholic Students’ Organization in the Dimaporo Gymnasium inevitably recounts the past incidents in the university, which established doubts about its security and safety measures.

The recent attack that resulted in actual deaths, injuries, and traumas of students, residents, and other members of our community including a Mindanao Varsitarian Reporter emphasizes the staggering security and safety we have on campus. The bombing happening in broad daylight, inside a university facility, and during a holy and protected gathering, with MSU constituents involved is a tragedy and an urgent matter that needs to be addressed. It is high time that we put this pressing matter on the pedestal. Our students have not lacked in staying vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Yet the continual threats and casualties further question the status of the campus security.

Thus, the Student Publication emphasizes the following:

𝐌𝐒𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 π•πšπ«π¬π’ππšπ«π’πšπ§ strongly condemns the heinous crimes brought to the victims and the university.

𝐌𝐒𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 π•πšπ«π¬π’ππšπ«π’πšπ§ stands in solidarity with our Christian brothers and sisters and with everyone involved in this matter. The student publication shall persist in addressing this issue until the appropriate measures, firm implementation, and upright maintenance of actions are taken.

𝐌𝐒𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 π•πšπ«π¬π’ππšπ«π’πšπ§ urges the authorities to provide their best security and to further strengthen it.

𝐌𝐒𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 π•πšπ«π¬π’ππšπ«π’πšπ§ urges everyone to stimulate empathy in our communities and to extend help and care for each other, especially for the affected people.

𝐌𝐒𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 π•πšπ«π¬π’ππšπ«π’πšπ§ urges the public against the spreading of invalidated news or information especially Hateful remarks that further escalates the jeopardy of Peace we are currently facing.

𝐌𝐒𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 π•πšπ«π¬π’ππšπ«π’πšπ§ urges publications against sensationalizing the horrors of the incident that worsens cultural and religious tensions.

𝐌𝐒𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 π•πšπ«π¬π’ππšπ«π’πšπ§ implores a community of resilience by cultivating an empathetic and objective outlook on the matter leaning towards Unity.

This is not the first encounter of violence in the university. There is a long history of abhorrent displays of brutality. This is not the first time the authorities had to promise that such a trend would never happen again. This is not the first time that LGUs had to intervene for the safety of the students. The most crucial urgency of security on the campus should always be the top priority of the university—even more important than education. Nonetheless, the Student Publication strongly advises the public to encourage a critical and not cynical approach to evaluating the incident. To look into the root causes of the effects and to value the essence of fostering Peace.

With this, the Student Publication iterates on the fact that Violence could never solve societal lapses. Violence is never morally right. Violence is never a part of Faith. The incident is NOT a confrontation of religion or culture. The incident is a manifestation of a disability to be peaceful, progressive, and educated.

Let us remember and continue to believe that Mindanao State University was established for Peace. And so, it will always fight for Peace even in the harshest disposition. Mindanao State University is created with the promise of eradicating the “Mindanao Problem”. The Battle for the Promise has never been easy and is not expected to be easy. Yet we are what the Mindanao State University has. We are its Potential to fight for Peace. Mindanao Varsitarian will always fight with Mindanao State University.
