The pursuit of justice is non-negotiable - JRP

It's not hating towards the academic institution that has endured throughout history. It's not tarnishing the long-term prestige it has that brought international recognition to it. It's not turning back during the most challenging times. It's not what one had perceived.

Few days ago, people have been barking on the wrong tree—engaging in name-calling, participating in heated arguments, and even resorting to shaming those who chose justice over tolerance. Our collective efforts, marked by considerable noise, have garnered attention from the national media, and rightfully so.

One thing is true, our common goal is the establishment of peace and strengthened security that would ensure the safety of everyone. However, amid this shared goal, there exists a divergence in our perspectives on what actions should be taken and the mechanisms to be employed. We opted for a more appealing approach: consistently exerting pressure on the higher-ups to strive for improvement.

We want to convey that our love for our institution equals yours, and we earnestly desire to afford it the opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to foster peace. Our criticism for the recent events is not directed at our institution; instead, we attribute it to a systemic issue that has persistently and inadvertently permitted such incidents. This includes inadequate security measures within the campus, such as insufficient CCTV coverage, some security personnel sometimes resorting to catcalling, and an entrance system that lacks the necessary safeguards to ensure student security. It's more than what one meets the eye.

To our dear MSU-Marawi alumni concerned about the institution's image, we fully and sincerely understand your worries and this stems from your deep affection for our alma mater. Know that our intent is not to tarnish the reputation of our beloved academic institution. However, it is our responsibility to advocate for justice and improved security measures, as our lives within the campus are at stake.

To our fellow MSUans who do not support our chosen actions, please understand that this is for all of us. We want to ensure that no one is gonna have to be another fallen victim of these systemic issues. We aspire for everyone's safety, coupled with the confidence that such incidents will not recur. In the unfortunate event that they do, since it is inevitable, swift and transparent actions will be implemented.

No one in the right mind wants this to happen. We call for better security measures, because #MSUisnotsafe so #MakeMSUsafer.
