The right of indigenous people to education is very much in our thoughts today on World Day for Social Justice.
In an article published in the 2022 Philippine Journal of Science, it was found that only 28 percent of IPs surveyed entered elementary school, and eventually, only around seven percent will finish college.
Education allows indigenous communities to understand their rights better, leading to self-empowerment. The low percentage of indigenous individuals able to access tertiary education ultimately restricts their communities’ capacity to advocate effectively for their rights, perpetuating a cycle of disempowerment.
We cannot have social justice when such disparities are perpetuated for indigenous people. The relentless cycle where the indigenous youth are unable to realize their right to education as other students must stop.
