Some 216 residents of Barangay Tandang Sora in Esperanza town are now safe from danger after suffering stomach pain and vomiting caused by suspected food poisoning according to Agusan del Sur Governor Santiago Cane Jr.
In an interview with DXGP-FM, Gov. Cane said patients he visited at the Esperanza Medicare Community Hospital (EMCH) on February 20 were already in stable condition as declared by Municipal Health Officer Dr. Maria Theresa Labiao after receiving immediate medical attention at the hospital.
Exhausted from distributing relief goods to flood victims, Gov. Cane said it was a blessing that he slept early and didn’t even had dinner on February 19 as he woke up early the next day at around 4:30 in the morning only to find out through messages in his phone that there was an outbreak in the said remote village.
Gov. Cane said he immediately rushed and witnessed EMCH teeming with patients as hospital beds were fully occupied and other parts of the medical facility utilized to accommodate the massive number of the ill villagers. He also learned some of the victims were brought to the D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital, the provincial hospital located in Patin-ay, Prosperidad and to the Bayugan Community Hospital in Bayugan City.
In a dialogue with Dr. Sheine Mae Falcon of EMCH, Gov. Cane checked if the patients can be discharged that same day but the medical officer replied that they still needed to undergo observation and can only be released anytime once cleared as already okay by their doctors.
Meanwhile, in an interview, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Jacqueline Francis Momville, said they could not yet determine whether it was the food or drinking water which caused the poisoning until the laboratory results from the health surveillance unit and the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine are already out.
Dr. Labiao also said a thorough examination must be done and not only focus on the food the victims have eaten but also the water they have taken since some portions of the barangay water system were submerged in flood waters.
For his part, Gov. Cane assured said he will not allow the patients who were victims of the contamination to spend a single centavo during their medication. He declared the provincial government will shoulder the expenses until everybody will be back to normal.
