The
Truth Shall Set us Free: SENTRO Statement of Solidarity with Senator
Hontiveros and the Senate Investigation on Apollo Quiboloy
The struggle for women’s liberation continues well into the 21st century. Despite the many advances made by women in fighting to live free and as equals, many barriers remain. In the Philippines, centuries of patriarchal domination continues to deprive women the full enjoyment of their rights as citizens. From our schools, to our offices, our homes, and even in our Churches, women face violence and harassment from our friends, peers, and people in authority.
The Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (SENTRO) stands firmly with our senator, Risa Hontiveros, in her principled stand for investigating alleged crimes and rights violations by pastor Apollo Quiboloy and his church. We laud the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality’s commitment to investigating all abuses, especially those at the hands of the powerful in society. SENTRO expresses our profound dismay with the other Senators that would undermine the committee’s ability to investigate alleged rights violations under its purview.
Mr. Quiboloy must be reminded that, in a secular and democratic republic, the institutions of the State are not beholden to religious and personal interests. It is equally improbable that foreign agencies would be interested in taking his life. Mr. Quiboloy is instead being summoned by the Senate to investigate alleged crimes and violence against women possibly happening within his church, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KJC). Rather than perceive it as a threat, such a gesture should instead be welcomed if Quiboloy is truly innocent of the charges. It is an opportunity for him to clear his name and restore the reputation of his church, especially as he has been issued a warrant of arrest in the United States.
SENTRO dares Quiboloy to answer the summons of the Senate committee if he has nothing to hide. If on the other hand, the allegations of abuse are true, then the Senate is duty-bound to carry on its investigation in aid of legislation. In any case, the trade unions stand with Senator Hontiveros and her committee. As the good book says, the truth shall set you free. The Filipino people and all alleged victims of abuse deserve the truth, and we are confident that Senator Hontiveros will uncover it through committee investigation.
