Operationalization of OFW Help Desk!

Multi-stakeholders attended the ceremony held on 27 June 2024. Present were barangay officials from the 23 barangays of Upi, 3 officials from the municipal local government unit (LGU), 2 officials from the Armed Forces of the Philippines' 57th Infantry Battalion, 2 from Upi Municipal Police Station (MPS), and 2 from Women and Children Protection Desk. Their involvement is vital in addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by OFWs, who are often the most at risk of exploitation and trafficking.
Under the Recovery and Reintegration Program for Trafficked Persons (RRPTP), the OFW Help Desk aims to protect the OFWs from illegal recruitment practices. By providing accurate information, guidance, and support, the help desk aims to prevent individuals from falling prey to fraudulent recruiters.
RRPTP focal person, Jan Michelle D. Agata, RSW, said that the establishment of the OFW Help Desk “marks a pivotal moment in our efforts to protect the OFWs from illegal recruitment and human trafficking”.
“We are dedicated to provide the necessary resources and support to ensure the safety and well-being of our OFWs. Together, we can create a safer and more secure future for them,” Agats added.
The Help Desk will offer various services, including providing information on legitimate recruitment agencies, assisting with the processing of necessary documentation, and offering legal advice to those who may have been victimized by illegal recruiters. This comprehensive support system is designed to empower potential OFWs with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about working abroad.
Another OFW Help Desk is planned to be established in Matanog town, which is also identified as having a high number of migrant workers.
Kaagapay Resource Center Inc. executive director Goldy Luck Omelio served as resource person of the activity.
Kaagapay is a non-government organization that works for the protection and promotion of the rights and welfare of OFWs, their families and relatives in Mindanao and in other parts of the country.
