PUNLA 2024, a success
With not less than 650 fruit, coconut and native trees planted, the Filipino Katoliko Church calls it a success beyond expectations.
What made it more interesting was the variety of.some rare trees planted - pomelo, star fruit, guyabano, atis, tisa, rambutan, lanzones, mangosteen, Kalamansi, kasoy, coconut, durian, narra, lauan, tugas, ipil-ipil, mango, and other fruits.
"Fulfilling. Feeling naku akong napalipay ang Ginoo ug akong nabuhat ang akong obligasyon ngadto Kaniya ug sa akong pamilya," a parishioner said.
"It is not about how many were planted but it is all about having people and communities organizing and mobilizing themselves to launch PUNLA. That is more than enough to celebrate," a Priest said.
"Our participation is not about solidarity to PUNLA but our contribution to the global efforts in our race against extinction. It is our contribution to restoring our life, our forests, our future," said by a member of an ethnic group.
"We are inspired by the support of the non-members and different stakeholders. We will do more next year," a parishioner said.
"I planted for my grandchildren and for my children," said a grandfather.
"Fruit trees do not only help reforest the earth but gives food and income to the community," said a agency official.
"We partner a land owner to.ensure that the planted trees are monitored and taken care of," a led organizer mentioned.
"I am happy as a youth that our parents, elder members and the reverends supported our proposal to have a denomination-wide tree planting. It is overwhelming and satisfying. I felt fulfilled," a youth leader said.
A kid shared too, "Nagsimilya lang mi sa balay ug gulayon nga itanom namo sa among garden unya ang mga turok nga mga liso sa prutas nga among kinaon akong gi-bagging. Among itanom sa among uma."
"This is our first time to launch a denomination-wide activity and we can consider it successful beyond our expectations. Our College of Bishop agreed to make PUNLA an annual denomination-wide activity. Of course it is not exclusive only for Filipino Katoliko members," a Bishop shared.
PUNLA is an effort and contribution of the Independent Philippine Christian sect Filipino Katoliko to the global call combatting the climate and food crisis. It is to put the faith jnto practice and as stewards of the Creation it is our moral and spiritual obligation.
It was held on November 30, 2024 (though other parishes started planting since 15 of November) as a participation to the culmination of the Environmental Awareness Month, to celebrate the Bonifacio Day and his sacrifices for national liberation and as a preparation for the Advent season.
In a resolution proposed by Bishop Jaime Dadol during the College of Bishop meeting, PUNLA is now officially an annual activity of Filipino Katoliko.
The launching was participated by the parishes and communities in Dinagat Island, Bukidnon, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, North Cotabato and Maguindanao del Norte provinces.
Prayers for salvation of the body, soul and spirit mean nothing in a dead planet of our neglect.
