While the whole country is commemorating the 127th Philippine freedom from Spain's monarch in 1898, We, coming from the different sectors, would like to reiterate that it was only a change of forms and colonizer after the imperialist powers of the USA took control of the country and interfered in its political, economic, and socio-cultural systems, processes, and policies.
Since the time of the propaganda movement and Katipunan, the poor are continually kept and tied under inequality, oppression, exploitation, and repression. And that condition moved them to rise up and declared freedom.
The new Bangsamoro autonomous region must also be celebrated after the long struggle of the Bangsamoro people and solidarity groups in different fields. But is it really free from the ties of exploitative and extractive development? It remains to be seen and must continuously be engaged by the peoples and communities.
The latest signing of the Bangsamoro Indigenous Peoples Act, and its Implementing Rules and Regulations, can also be celebrated as it may serve as an instrument of the Non-Moro Indigenous Peoples for their assertions and democratic rights over their political, economic, and socio-cultural future inside the ancestral domains.
But freedom is only best celebrated by the people if it moves them away from the poor tri-people hard and difficult realities.
The persistence of the threats to life, liberty, and ancestral homes of the human rights and environment defenders is not freedom.
Non-Moro Indigenous Peoples leaders and communities are targeted with direct threats amidst pursuing their democratic fight for their rightful claims to ancestral domains.
Access to social services and genuine democratic processes in the region and in the country remains selective and in the hands of the elite. This is not freedom.
Electoral processes, public fund allocations and government institutions remain rigged and anomalous, favoring the few in power.
The dominant economic and development orientation remains destructive, extractive, exploitative, insensitive, unsustainable, and divisive. This is not freedom.
The struggle for food sovereignty and agroecology becomes central to the assertion of true freedom. Farmers, fisherfolk, and Indigenous communities across the country continue to fight for control over their land, waters, seeds, and knowledge and technologies. The resistance against land grabbing, industrial monoculture, and corporate food systems reflects the ongoing colonial legacy in our agriculture and food systems.
Genuine independence means the right of people to have access and control over their own food and farming systems, grounded in ecological sustainability, cultural integrity, and community well-being. Without food sovereignty, there can be no real freedom for the rural and marginalized majority.
We may have enjoyed a sort of freedom and independence from direct foreign interference, but we are still tied and cuffed by elitist and exclusivist political and economic systems run by the local oligarchy collaborating with the imperialist powers.
