New research from the Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center (LRC) on the Philippine Mining Situation found an alarming growth rate in the energy transition metals (ETMs) sector that could cause widespread ecological destruction and human rights violations if kept unchecked. ETMs are minerals needed for the shift to renewable energy.
Here are some key findings of paper:
The number of approved mining projects have increased by 14% and mining land use by 8%
Nickel mining has registered the biggest production growth at an average of 77% largely due to electric vehicle supply chain demand for these energy transition metals (ETMs)
Despite this, mining contributed just an average of 1% contribution to GDP and 0.45% to employment
The Philippine Mining Situation is part of LRC's series on the intersection between mining and renewable energy. For LRC, a just minerals transition (JMT), concretized in the proposed measure of the Alternative Minerals Management Bill (AMMB), needs to be pursued by the government.
