LRC urges national and regional authorities to honor law-enshrined rights of South Upi residents

The Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center (LRC) stands in solidarity with the Lambangian, Teduray Indigenous people and migrant settlers in South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur.

The Center joins these communities in vehemently opposing the proposed mineral reservation area within their ancestral domains.

The blatant disregard for Free and Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) processes, crucial for the protection of Indigenous rights, is unacceptable. The pending ancestral domain claim at the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) necessitates transparent and respectful engagement, which has been neglected.
The sanctity and preservation of these ancestral lands are non-negotiable. The mineral reservation enables easier entry of mining operations resulting in environmental destruction. This will threaten not just the present but the livelihood and future of these communities.

LRC stands with these affected groups, urging the national and regional authorities to honor the rights enshrined in the law and respect the sanctity of their lands by opposing the establishment of the mineral reservation area.

We urge indigenous rights, and environmental protection advocates to join in amplifying this call to support the Lambangian, Teduray Indigenous people and migrant settlers in South Upi.
