DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 24 January)—A crowd of 50,000 is expected to flock Davao City’s main streets on Sunday (January 28) for a prayer rally expressing disapproval against the signature campaign for a people’s initiative (PI) to change the 1987 Constitution, echoing the stand of the Dutertes.
Councilor Conrado Baluran, who ran under the Duterte-led Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, urged Dabawenyos to join the Sunday rally during his privilege speech before the Sangguniang Panlungsod on Tuesday.
According to a document endorsed by the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO), the event is being organized by Zegen Management Group. A Linkedin post by Zegen managing partner Anna Magnaye said their group was the event organizer behind the inauguration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The CTTMO document signed by PCol. Dionisio C. Abude (ret.) mentioned road closures along San Pedro Street from corner Bolton to corner C.M Recto; San Pedro Street from corner Bolton extension to corner Magallanes and Bolton Street from corner Rizal to corner San Pedro Street from 10 p.m. of January 26, 2024 to January 29, 2024.
F. Iñigo Street (Anda St.), from corner Magallanes Street to corner Rizal Street, and C. Bangoy St. (Ponciano Street) from corner Rizal Street to corner San Pedro Street will also be closed from 8 a.m. on January 27 until January 29.
But Baluran, who also chairs the SP’s committee on transportation and communications, told the media on Tuesday that the road closures will be “partial” to avoid interfering traffic flow during the event.
Baluran said Sunday’s event will be the mass launching rally dubbed as “One Nation, One Opposition” for a “greater cause for a nationwide campaign.”
“Davao City will remain resilient and will not just stand aside as an observer but shall take part continuously striving to unite for one nation, one strong opposition,” he said.
The councilor also emphasized that “Dabawenyos are not for sale,” a reference to the alleged deceiving signature campaigns to change the constitution in exchange for bribes.
He expressed dismay on the alleged dirty tactics as it would not only damage democratic freedom but also raise doubts about the authenticity of those who signed due to misleading information.
Earlier this month, Davao City Representative Paolo “Pulong” Duterte (1st Dist.) said in a statement that he was informed that Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Partylist Rep. Margarita “Migs” Nograles is spearheading the PI movement in Davao City.
All the 24 senators, meanwhile, signed on Tuesday a manifesto rejecting the House of Representatives’ bid for charter change through a people’s initiative.
“We respect and recognize the people as our sovereign, with the right to call for Constitutional amendments. We must, however, guard against any sinister and underhanded attempt to change the Constitution by exploiting our democratic process under the guise of a people’s initiative,” the manifesto read.
