Why Is May Day Important For Women?
Because all women are workers!
Women's bodies, together with their jobs, keep the country's economy and reproduction in motion and thriving. But women face violent work practices.
Women's struggle to achieve equality and independence begins with the struggle for decent wages. Gender equality cannot be achieved if exploitative work relationships and the confiscation of means of life are not yet broken. Poverty of development as a form of gender based violence.
Throughout its history, May Day is a landmark of the struggles and triumphs of labor movements around the world to create changes in living conditions for fairer working-class. Those social changes are inseparable from the struggle of democracy and citizenship.
Currently we are faced with low wage regimes, criminalization of workers and HAM fighters, looting of living spaces, exploitation of labor and natural resources, discriminatory rules and other government policies that prioritize only investment and development. People especially women, disabled, transgender and other identities are placed at the most disadvantaged positions to face it.
In addressing the situation, then we the Indonesian Women Alliance invite all women, workers, farmers, fishermen, and other working classes to join the May Day 2024 action. This action is as an initiative for women and the people to reclaim what has been plundered and build against forces.
