Filipino Katoliko Church: Free thy Nation! Free thy Peoples! Free thy Body, Soul and Spirit!

Free thy Nation! Free thy Peoples! Free thy Body, Soul and Spirit!
126th Philippine Independence Day Statement of the Filipino Katoliko Church

The Filipino Katoliko Church joins the citizens of the Philippines and all freedom-loving citizens in the world in the observance of the 126th Philippine Independence Day from the Spanish colonization.

Our celebration must center in reflecting on the sacrifices by the martyrs of the reform and revolutionary movements in that era and get inspiration from those. We must reflect of what have we become as a nation of peoples 126 years ago. We must ask ourselves from the standpoints of the martyred GOMBURZA (Galatians 5:1) and the National Hero Jose Rizal, their counterpart in the Katipunan movement Andres Bonifacio, and all of those men and women (Gabriela Silang, Apolinario Mabini, etc) that have contributed valuably in the long road to Philippine freedom from colonizer Spain. Is the country we have now is worth of the lives of the freedom evangelizers and fighters in the past?

Nowadays, we are surrounded with various internal and inter-national conflicts and political dynamics as the dominant global powers compete for control over the finite natural wealth and territories. Our independence must not turn into apathy, self-preservation and greed to subdue the others (Galatians 5:13-14). As communities of faithful and children of God of different denomination let us not isolate ourselves from the socio-political dynamics instead let us all be involved with our concrete solutions and recommendations to be free from the interlapping questions of poverty, wars, climate disasters, corruption and greed, human rights violations and suffering from the sins.

As we always affirm our identity and sovereignty as a nation globally, we must also always be in solidarity with all of the citizens and countries experiencing the same colonization and national oppression (Ukraine, Palestine, etc). Let us also celebrate and pay tribute everyday to our daily heroes – all men and women workers, farmers, environment defenders and the apostles of good deeds. Our ultimate aim is to build a world without boundaries guided by the principles of compassion, solidarity, sustainability and co-existence of different faiths and beliefs – a global community of the children of God (Ephesians 4:1-6) and responsible stewards of the creation (Genesis 2:15).

Free thy Nation! Free thy Peoples! Free thy Body, Soul and Spirit!
