Promoting Agroecology to the Youth
Young people from various parts of Mindanao gathered for MASIPAG Mindanao's Youth for Agroecology Camp held at the Marihatag Tree Park, Marihatag town, Surigao del Sur last June 13-15, 2024.
Amidst a rapidly aging farming population and a growing trend of young people increasingly moving away from agricultural work, the camp seeks to reconnect today's youth with the land. Its goal is to encourage advocacy or direct youth participation in farmer-led agroecology and rural development.
MASIPAG network discussed the challenges young people, especially in rural communities, face every day, and underscored the significant role of the youth in different conversations and decision-making around food systems and the environment.
Participants also got the chance to meet and exchange ideas and knowledge with other young people who are passionate about sustainable agricultural production which fosters robust stewardship of the environment, empowers farming communities and respects their fundamental rights over seed, land, and other resources, and celebrates diversity and solidarity among peoples.
MASIPAG Mindanao Regional Coordinator Leo XL Fuentes said in his message to the youth: "You have shown many talents. Continue to write poems, sketch, dance, perform stage plays, and sing, and always remember to offer your talents to the small farmers and other marginalized sectors."
Unlocking the door to meaningful youth engagement in agroecology and the transformation to sustainable food systems ensures the future of our food and planet.
