COTABATO CITY – The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao's (BARMM) second-highest appointed official is firmly committed to moving forward with the first-ever parliamentary elections set in October.
In his privilege speech Monday night, BARMM Parliament Speaker Pangalian Balindong asserted that the transition period is ready to conclude. Thus, the regular election must be held as scheduled without delay.
“I believe it is high time to give the Moro people the opportunity to shape their parliament by electing its members in the BARMM parliamentary elections this October,” Balindong said.
He noted that the 80-member Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), the interim regional law-making body, has fulfilled its mandate over the past six years through significant legislation, governance reforms and the establishment of a robust foundation for democratic self-rule.
“Following the passage of the Bangsamoro Electoral Code, we have seen many of our brothers and sisters step forward and express their readiness and desire to serve their fellow Moros. Let us give them the chance to prove themselves,” he said.
Balindong said all BTA members are in agreement to proceed with the Oct. 13 balloting, despite reports that some interested groups are pushing for a delay in the regional parliament. (PNA)
