NMIPs successfully held Regional Inter-Tribal Convention, selected Sectoral Representatives to BARMM Parliament

 

The Alyansa ng mga Mamamayan para sa Karapatang Pantao stands in full solidarity with the Non-Moro Indigenous Peoples (NMIP) as they achieve a historic milestone in their collective struggle for genuine representation, self-determination, and human rights.

We extend our warmest congratulations to the Non-Moro Indigenous Peoples Committee (NMIPC) for successfully organizing the Regional Inter-Tribal Convention at Pagana Kutawato, 

Cotabato City. Witnessed by national and regional representatives from the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples' Affairs (MIPA), accredited civil society organizations, and independent citizens' watch groups, this momentous gathering provided a vital space for participating tribes to exercise their customary laws and governance practices within the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

We honor the delegates from the six participating NMIP tribes—the Higaonon, Erumanen ne Menuvu, Blaan, Manovu Dulangan, Lambangian, and Teduray—who assembled in unity, mutual respect, and shared purpose.

​

Through this consensus-building process, two representatives— a woman Teduray and a male Lambangian—were selected to serve to the first elected term of the BARMM Parliament. This achievement is a powerful testament to indigenous solidarity, traditional governance, and transparent democratic engagement.

​

We likewise commend the agreed rotation framework, which designates the Erumanen ne Menuvu and Dulangan Manobo tribes for the second term, followed by the Blaan and Higaonon tribes for the third. This equitable arrangement reflects deep respect for every tribe’s right to participate fully in the political life of the region.

This milestone presents both a challenge and an opportunity: a challenge to navigate the complex dynamics between mainstream regional politics and ancestral governance, and an opportunity to boldly articulate the long-standing rights, struggles, and aspirations of the NMIP within the formal halls of power.

Continuous consolidation and solidarity remain essential. The assertion of ancestral rights and political inclusion by the NMIP is indispensable to achieving lasting peace and social justice in the Bangsamoro.

The Alyansa ng mga Mamamayan para sa Karapatang Pantao remains steadfast in walking alongside the Non-Moro Indigenous Peoples. We will continue to support their collective unity, advocate for the full recognition of their ancestral domains and rights, and amplify their voices inside the halls of power and beyond.
